Loyal Donor Appreciation Week - October 21 to 25 - honours the profound impact dedicated donors have on the University. Today, we share the inspiring journey of Rob Hilton, whose story is creating a lasting generational impact.

About Rob Hilton

Rob graduated from the University of Guelph with a Diploma in Landscape Design and Nursery Management and later earned his Bachelor of Landscape Architecture in 1976.  From the beginning, Rob and his classmate Tom Foster were trailblazers, establishing an award-winning practice over two decades. Their projects were diverse and far-reaching, from parks and community centers to amusement attractions and subdivisions, including the renowned Village by the Arboretum in Guelph. Their work took them across North America, Europe, and the Middle East, staying ahead of demographic trends.

When Tom’s career path diverged in 1996, Rob transitioned Hilton Foster Limited into Hilton Landmarks Inc., specializing in cemetery design. Rob has completed over 550 commissions across Canada and the USA, leaving a lasting mark on countless communities.

Generational Legacy with the Arboretum

Rob’s connection to the U of G is rooted in the legacy of his late father, Dr. Robert J. Hilton. Dr. Hilton was a pioneering figure at the University, serving as the Department Head of Horticultural Sciences and spearheading the creation of the landscape architecture program. He was also the founding director of the University’s Arboretum, which is now internationally accredited and fosters interdisciplinary climate change research, land-based learning, and physical and mental well-being.

In honour of his father, Rob and his family established an annual scholarship to support students in horticultural studies and landscape architecture. The scholarship keeps Dr. Hilton’s legacy alive and inspires future generations of students. Rob is also a loyal donor to the Arboretum, a living legacy that reflects his family and personal ties to U of G.

Rob’s gratitude and desire to give back to the community fuel his generosity. He finds joy in seeing the physical improvements at the Arboretum and in meeting the recipients of his father’s scholarship.

Most Memorable Moments with U of G

Reflecting on his time at the U of G, Rob recalls the camaraderie and fun he experienced as a student. The beautiful campus and the environment of the Arboretum were constant sources of inspiration. Rob knows his father would be thrilled to see the growth and development of the grounds today.

The University is grateful to have a strong community of alumni and donors whose contributions shape the future. Rob’s story is a testament to the power of giving back and leaving a lasting legacy.
