Food Security, Sustainable Farming the Aims of New Chair at U of G

Agriculture today confronts a blend of challenges: a growing global population demands more and higher-quality food, fuel, and fiber; climate change heightens the risk of extreme weather events; and there is unprecedented scrutiny from the public and governments. Yet, in recent decades, technological advancements have emerged, enhancing farming efficiency. 

The Martin and Denise Pick Family Chair in Sustainable Cropping Systems is dedicated to addressing these challenges by promoting efficient crop production while maintaining soil health, essential for food security. Funded by Martin and Denise Pick, this Chair supports research and education focused on sustainable food crop production with the primary aim of producing more food on less land. 

Sustainable cropping systems incorporate practices such as crop rotation, cover cropping, soil science, precision agriculture, and remote sensing to grow food while safeguarding the environment. 

The establishment of the Martin and Denise Pick Family Chair in Sustainable Cropping Systems reflects a long-term commitment and investment in a better future.
